The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
