The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
