The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 an orphaned relative 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
