The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
