And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
