And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 yet there was not a sign that We showed them that was not greater than its sister, and We seized them with the punishment so that they might return. 48 And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided." 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 So We made them a bygone fable and a lesson for the latter generations. 56
