We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
