And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 Every Sign that We showed them was greater than its predecessor; and then We seized them with Our chastisement so that they may return (to the Right Way). 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 But lo, each time We removed Our affliction from them, they would go back on their word. 50 The Pharaoh shouted to his people, "My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine? and can you not see that the streams flow from beneath my palace? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
