We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 But when We had relieved them of their punishment they broke their promise. 50 The Pharaoh shouted to his people, "My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine? and can you not see that the streams flow from beneath my palace? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah). 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
