Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
