The Mountain (Al-Toor)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER Mount Sinai! 1 By a Decree inscribed 2 In parchment spread open 3 By the much-frequented Fane; 4 The roof raised high, 5 and the sea swarming, 6 surely, the punishment of your Lord is about to come, 7 there is no one who could avert it, 8 On the day when the heavens will swiftly fly 9 And the mountains move away with (awful) movement, 10 On that Day woe to those who belied 11 all those who [throughout their lives] but idly played with things vain 12 That Day shall they be thrust down to the Fire of Hell, irresistibly. 13 This is the fire which you used to give the lie to. 14 Is this magic, or do ye not see? 15 “Enter it – now whether you patiently bear it or are impatient – it is the same for you; for you is a recompense only for what you used to do.” 16 Lo! those who kept their duty dwell in gardens and delight, 17 Happy because of what their Lord hath given them, and (because) their Lord hath warded off from them the torment of hell-fire. 18 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working. 19 Reclining upon couches ranged in rows; and We shall espouse them to wide-eyed houris. 20 And those who believe and whose families follow them in Faith,- to them shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (of the fruit) of aught of their works: (Yet) is each individual in pledge for his deeds. 21 And We shall bestow on them, of fruit and meat, anything they shall desire. 22 They will exchange cups of wine free of (incitement to) pleasantry or sin. 23 ۞ And there go round, waiting on them menservants of their own, as they were hidden pearls. 24 They will ask each other questions, 25 saying, "We were afraid while in the world. 26 "But Allah has been good to us, and has delivered us from the Penalty of the Scorching Wind. 27 we were before ever calling upon Him; surely He is the All-benign, the All-compassionate.' 28
