The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
