The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
