The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 Allah's is the last and the first. 25
