The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 and taught to him 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 near which is Paradise. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
