Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
