The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
