The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the setting star, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
