The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it descends, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
