A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
