a good many of olden times, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
