These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
