▼ 56 The Inevitable
Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 But those of the left hand -- how those of the left hand -- 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike and get by friction. 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
