A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
