A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
