A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
