A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
