a large group of the earlier people 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
