A multitude of those of old 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
