a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
