These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
