Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
HaMeem 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
