A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
