The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
