A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
