A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
