a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
