The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
