The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
