The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
