The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 tearing away his skin! 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 save those that pray 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
