The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Save worshippers. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
