In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation. 4 Indeed We shall soon ordain a heavy responsibility upon you. 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 And leave Me alone [to deal] with those who give the lie to the truth - those who enjoy the blessings of life [without any thought of God] - and bear thou with them for a little while: 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
