The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 Pollution shun! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 it will be a hard day 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
