The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
