The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 May he be condemned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
