The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise and give warning! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 May he be condemned! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
