The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise and give warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And pollution shun. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked round; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
