The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
