He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you attend to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and fearfully, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 then the way eased for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
